handmade felt jewellery & felt flowers
Felting is the process of making the fibres in natural pure wool such as lambswool, merino, alpacha to 'knit' together & make a fabric. We are all used to the mass produced felt squares but handmade felt has a completely different unrefined texture & can be used to make all sorts of things & I include it in my handmade jewellery most of the time.
In order to 'felt' wool a lot of soap & water is required as is a certain amount of hard work & strong arms! The soap & water makes the fibres start to felt together & combining this with shocking the fabric by throwing it about (great fun) or running under cold water, the fibres shrink further & you end up with felt. It can be a long process although the beads I use in my beaded necklaces & bead bracelets take as little as 5 minutes each. Very satisfying!
